Totes for Terrific Teachers!

My girls' teachers have been awesome this year! The girls have had a great school year and have learned so much and have had a bunch of fun. I wanted to make something nice for their teachers so I decided to make them tote bags. I found a pattern at JoAnn Fabric's and some really cute coordinating fabric.

Model Lydia. This bag was for her teacher.

The bags have a tie enclosure.

A little pocket inside!

I decided to call them "totes" instead of purses because I didn't want to make them feel like they had to carry them as purses - some women are particular about their purses - and the bags turned out big enough and are versatile enough they could be used as purses or bags. The teachers LOVED them! Lydia's teacher told her that while the students were at recess she emptied out her purse and put all of her stuff into the new purse! Arlene's teacher told her she's going to use the bag when she goes to the pool this summer; it will hold her water bottles and books. Yay!

This one was given to Arlene's teacher.

The handles tie at the top.

I loved the pattern and the fabric of the bag I made for Lydia's teacher so much that I made myself the same bag!

Etsy Faves or Favs or however you spell it

It's time for this week's Etsy Favorites Wednesday list. How do you spell favs? Is it favs or faves? I always put an 'e' in there but I'm not sure if that's correct.

Ceramic garden stakes - I love these! So colorful!

Make lemonade - how true is this? I must remember this sentiment.

Painted Jack pillow - I must have this.

Skelleton doll - I must also have this.

I made stuff this weekend

I had declared that I was going to make stuff this weekend, and indeed I did. I sewed practically all weekend! It was so incredibly hot outside so it was the perfect time to hide away in my craft room and stitch, stitch, stitch. While I sew, the girls are kept busy playing with their Legos, or they do projects with me in my craft room - they each made necklaces and filled a pad of paper with illustrations.

I made two totes for teacher gifts, finished a crocheted skirt and finished four quilted placemats. {I also had a craft fail when I attempted to carve a pumpkin-shaped stamp. I will be attempting that again soon. I hope. I have a great idea, in my head, but I'm not able to execute it exactly how I want to. It's incredibly frustrating.}

I'll be sharing pics of the totes and the quilted placemats later this week. Today, I'm sharing a project that took forrrrrrreeeeeevvvvvvveeeeerrrrr to complete!  I'm so glad that it's done. A crocheted skirt!

This purple crocheted skirt was originally supposed to be for Lydia, because she loves purple, and then I was going to make a green one for Arlene. But the purple skirt turned out a bit too snug on Lydia, so, Arlene got it, because she's a bit more petite that her sister {and Lydia was totally cool with that - I promised her I'd make her a skirt out of fabric in the near future - I won't be attempting another crocheted skirt because it took so long to make this one!}

I bought the pattern off Ravelry {available here} and got to work on the skirt waaaay back in February. I worked on it here and there and I liked the pattern - it has a shell stitch and what the pattern author called a V stitch. I'm just the type of person that likes to finish projects quickly; so, crocheting bigger items really isn't my forte. I'd work on the skirt every so often while watching TV in the evening. But then I got to the point where I just wanted to finish the darn thing, so I sat and worked on it Friday night for about two and a half hours and got it done! {And, the truth? I didn't even finish the skirt according to the pattern - I got about five rows away from being done with it per the pattern's instructions and I just finished it off with my own version of the ruffle! I just wanted it done!}

I think it came out quite darling!

Incidentally, this is how Arlene poses now whenever I ask her to pose for a picture. Hip popped out, hand on hip and posed legs. Lord help us.
As I said, I'm glad the skirt is done - I'm happy with the end result. I'm disappointed it didn't fit Lydia, because if it fit Lydia then we'd get double use out of it; when Lydia out-grew it then Arlene could have worn it. Ohhh well. Arlene promised me that she'll wear it lots this summer.

Aside from all of the sewing I did this weekend, we also saw Dark Shadows which we completely and thoroughly enjoyed! Another Tim Burton masterpiece! Johnny Depp was so great in his role of Barnabas Collins.

Stay tuned - I'll share pics of the teacher totes and quilted placemats later this week!

Announcing the give-a-way winner!

Wow, pretty good turnout for my give-a-way! Yay! There were 47 entries, and random.org picked winner number 30 ...

... which is Mandy! Congratulations Mandy! I'll mail out your doll Tuesday!

Thank you to everyone who entered! It was fun participating in the Sew, Mama, Sew give-a-way week. I will definitively do it again!

I'm going to make something this weekend

There was a time, a year and a half ago or more, when I would spend hours in my craft room after the kiddies were in bed at night, sewing away, happily working on projects. Then we moved into an apartment, and I did a little crafting and sewing, but not much, then we moved in with family and there was hardly any crafting going on at all, and then, we moved into our awesome new house last fall. I haven't really been making much of anything since we moved into the new house. I have a super awesome new craft room, but, I just don't have the time to sit in there. Well, let me clarify that, I *do* have the time, but, I have been preferring to spend my time doing other things. Like watch TV. Or exercise. Or play with the kiddies or watch a movie with the husband. I haven't stayed up late working on a craft or a project since we've moved into the new house, and that's kinda odd to me. I don't regret doing those other things, things other than sewing, and I don't regret going to bed earlier rather than staying up late stitching, but, I realized that I miss it.

This past Wednesday evening I made myself spend some time in my craft room. Which sounds so stupid, I shouldn't have to make myself go in there and make stuff; it's what I like to do! But, I had the time to do it and I told myself I was going to work for two hours, and wow, it was worth it. I joked to my husband that I was in the zone, that it was 'cathartic sewing' because I was sewing, sewing, sewing and thinking, thinking, thinking and working through some of the stuff that's been swirling around in my head lately. I've always been able to get my best thinking done when I'm working on something with my hands. I remember as a youngster, sitting cross legged on my canopy bed, cross-stitching away, quietly working and just thinking about stuff. Probably silly teenager stuff that was uber important at the time! Now-a-days, it's heavier stuff that's swirling through my head, stuff that I need to be thinking about, stuff that I need to allow myself the time to process and think through. And I did some of that on Wednesday, and it helped me a lot, and I want to do more of it more often.

I need to etch more 'cathartic sewing' time into my schedule. I need to give myself a chance to sit, to clear my head, do something with my hands, create something, feel productive. I need to set aside the time to do it, at least once a week, as my schedule allows. So? This weekend, this three-day weekend we've got?  I've decided I'm going to MAKE something. I'm going to make something completely new. I've been wanting to create some new products for my Etsy shop and I'm going to do it. I have some ideas. I want to make little pumpkins. Little stuffed pumpkins, maybe from a linocut block stamp? Maybe. Also, I'm going to finish those quilted placemats I've been working on for ages. I'm going to GET STUFF DONE and I'm going to clear my head and it's going to be glorious

Etsy Favorites Wednesday

I almost forgot about posting today's Etsy Favorite Wednesday list! Can you believe it?! Shame on me. Here's this week's list - no real theme or anything this week, just stuff I've been eyeing.

Seven and three quarters

Our girls are seven and three quarters. In just four short months, they'll be eight years old. In just eight very short days, they'll be out of school, having successfully rocked first grade in a brand new school. They made so many new friends this year and did so incredibly well in school. We got their progress reports and they've far surpassed the benchmark for where they are supposed to be. Such smart little girls we have.

Where does the time go? I say that all the time but really time has just flown right by. I get misty eyed as I remember them as wee little babies and as darn funny toddlers. Now-a-days we're dealing with some strong-willed seven-and-three-quarter-year-old sassy business, but they are also very sweet, too. At times, super grown up, they don't need us one bit; at other times, they remind us of when they were babies, getting their blankets and wanting to cuddle.

Our little peanut Arlene, ever the jokster, ever the funny girl. She cracks us up all the time. She's quick witted and knows she's being funny so that makes her even more hilarious. She's also quite the air-head, which we've all just embraced. Little girl is super flighty one minute then the next minute inquisitively asking us, 'what is the capital of Texas?' She's got an eye for the arts and crafts and especially fashion. She studies things with an eye for detail and you can tell her little brain is just working away. This past weekend she found a little sparkly blue fascinator hat at a flea market and wore than thing everywhere with admirable confidence. Her forgetfulness and not-completely-listening gets her into trouble sometimes, but she just takes it in stride, as she does with most things.

Our big girl Lydia, always the first one to offer to help, to offer to fetch something for you. She's always been a bit bigger than her twin sister and therefore has the "older sister" thing going on, although she's technically only 30 seconds older. She protects Arlene and refuses to yell at her or be mean to her even when Arlene deserves it. She's such a sweetie. She's into music, too: she got a ukulele this weekend (another flea market find!) and made up happy songs, strumming away on her little guitar. She is into sports and wants to play baseball this summer whereas Arlene wants nothing to do with it. She always wants to be active yet when she gets tired we all pay the price. Dear Lydia doesn't know when to call it quits and will push herself to the point of pouty, huge nasty tears and works herself up into a frenzy then ends up sleeping it off after a good cry.

The girls, being seven and three quarters, are trying to figure out limits, and limits are pushed, quite frequently. They are good girls, good sweet girls who are rarely in trouble. And when I say 'trouble' I mean they get into 'trouble' for not picking up their socks. They don't do really bad things. (yet) (I hope never, but it's inevitable, right?) They're sweet to each other, most of the time. Sometimes it's a challenge to wrangle them into listening, into doing what they're told, the first time they're told. They distract each other and we're left wanting to pull our hair out after asking five times for them to do something. They get told to quiet down a LOT because they can work themselves up into a whole mess of singing, laughing, screaming girly girl loudness. We've always said things are in stereo all the time. Double the noise level, all the time. While the noise level is really annoying now, we'll miss it when it's no longer filling the house, I know we will!!

Our sweet, sassy girls. We love them so. It's a joy, every day, to be able to giggle and laugh with them and at them and their antics.

Sew, Mama, Sew Give-a-way: A button-eyed doll!

Hello! I'm glad you've found my blog via the Sew, Mama, Sew give-a-way. I'll just get right on down to the nitty gritty - what I'm giving away!  I'm giving away one of my handmade button-eyed dolls!

This dainty gal's name is Frances. She's an heirloom-quality button-eyed fabric doll with a funky flowered design on her dress, green striped legs, brown hair and brown eyes. She was machine and hand sewn. She's made out of cotton and muslin fabric. She has a "zipper" down the back of her dress which is where I stitched her together and a cloth tag that features my Etsy shop's name and address. She was made in my pet-free, smoke-free home. She stands 14 inches tall and her arm span is 8.5 inches. The bottom of her dress measures 5.5 inches wide. She's filled with soft fluff and is super soft and flexible, yet durable. She's washable too! Because of her plastic button eyes she's better suited for children that are 3 years and up. She's perfect for hugging, loving and carrying around on various adventures. Frances is actually the last plastic button-eyed doll I have! I've sold my entire stock of dolls and I'm not sure if I'll be making any more.

Here's how to enter!

Leave a comment on this post. Please make sure to leave your email address so that if you win I can contact you. AND! Answer this question: if you are a sewer, what is the first thing you remember sewing?  If you do not sew, but are the creative type, what's the first thing you remember making?

Personally, I was quite handy at whipping up elastic ponytail scrunchies at a young age. I started making them when I was about 14 and I remember the first few times I made them my mom had to help to re-thread the needle and refill the bobbin. It wasn't too long before I figured out the machine and was cranking out those badboys left and right. I thought I was pretty darn cool being able to make my own hair accessories.

This give-a-way will be open until 5 p.m. Friday, May 25. I'll pick the winner Friday night via a random number generator and contact the winner via email and I'll put a post up here announcing who won. I will ship internationally!

Go to Sew, Mama, Sew to enter more give-a-ways! There are some awesome crafters and sewers who are giving away some fantastic items!

Want to learn more?

I started making dolls when my two girls were younger. I wanted to make a simple vintage-looking doll that was also durable. I love buttons, too so I decided that my dolls would have button eyes. I have had quite a good time making many, many dolls. No two dolls that I've made have ever been identical. I had good success selling them at craft shows and in my Etsy shop too. For one craft show I had an assembly line going - I made 60 dolls! I have had a blast making them for friends and family too over the years.

My dollies at a craft show!
But then, I kind of got tired of the dolls. I had a few custom orders to make and I found myself getting mad at the dolls and at having to make them and stuff them, blaaaaah - I wasn't enjoying it at all. So, I stopped. I haven't made a doll in almost a year. Sometimes, I do miss them. I may start making them again, but I'm not sure ... I have announced that I've officially "retired" the design but that's not to say it can't come out of retirement! I haven't been making much of anything lately because life has been so darn busy, but I have dabbled in a few other things: I've gotten into quilting and I've jumped into carving linocut blocks and have had fun making pillows and tea towels out of my designs.

Well, that's about it in a nutshell! If you've read this far into this post - well hey, you get another entry in the give-a-way! Tell me what you make! Have you ever gotten tired of something that you've made a lot of?  Did you get out of that rut? If so, how?

Thanks for stopping by my blog and good luck in the give-a-way!

11 years is a long time but then again it's not

Today, my husband and I have been married for eleven years. It truly doesn't seem like we've been married 11 years. It's gone by so quickly! We have a happy, good life. I wouldn't trade our life for anything. We have two awesome little girls, an awesome house and the two of us? We still get along very well together, I'd say even more-so than when we first got married. Age and years together has made us stronger and closer. My Mikey is my best friend. Always has been and always will be.

He's a super dad to our two little girls. They love him soooo much.

This past year was perhaps the best turning point in our lives when we moved into our fabulous new house.

We aren't doing anything too fancy schmancy for our anniversary; that's just how we roll. We're camping this weekend and that's just perfect: spending time together and with our kids and family is what we love to do.

Photos, lots of photos

Last month I posted a photo collage of my Instagram photos {post here} as a way to archive them for memory's sake. I'm doing it again! I've taken a whole BUNCH of photos since the last update. Are you on Instagram? I'm "couplemorehours" there.

{Click on the image for a bigger version!}

I noticed when I was putting this together that there are no pictures of my husband in the group. I promise you, he does exist.

My favorite from the whole batch is the one on the top right; the girls were dressed up as ninjas {wearing all black - even black tights on their heads} and they kept slinking through the house and would jump out at us and say "NINJA!" then they'd act secretive again and act like we couldn't see them. Their imaginations are awesome. I also really like the photo of the two of them together, on the bottom row in the middle. Little sweeties.

Amusement park FULL OF FUN

This summer is going to be awesome for a lot of reasons but the biggest reason is perhaps the location of our new house to Kings Island! We live 10 minutes away! So! We bought season passes!

We went for the first time Tuesday evening and it was so.much.fun. Such awesomely awesome good times. The girls had a blast and it was so great to see them thoroughly and completely enjoying themselves. They have no fear! Little stinkers have no fear!  They rode The Beast with their Daddy, which is a pretty darn big roller coaster.

Snapped after riding the Beast. Daddy was so proud!
Now, me, I cannot ride the coasters. I will vomit all over everyone. I'm perfectly content walking around the park and watching them ride the rides! I talk them into riding the mini kiddie rides with me. The Boo Blaster is my favorite. It's quite 'booooring' for them, but they indulge me. Mike is happy to have the girls as coaster-riding buddies. He was so excited that they wanted to ride the big rides. Arlene especially has no fear - she was mad she wasn't tall enough to ride the big huge goes-upside-down coaster!

They were cracking me up - they wanted to ride all of the puke-inducing spinny rides like the Scambler. Ugggg. They loved it though!

Lydia's hands are IN THE AIR!
There was hardly anyone at the park - it was the perfect time to go. We didn't have to wait in any lines and the weather was just right. We plan to go back many, many more times, especially in the month of May when the park isn't that crowded. Such a great, awesome time!

We rode the elevator to the top of the Tower. Cool views!  This photo is looking south. If I would have snapped a photo looking north I could have pointed out our neighborhood. Next time!

Etsy Favorites Wednesday

I'm a fan of Scandinavian design - I like the bright bold colors, the simple shapes and big flowers. I dig a bunch of artists on Etsy who create things with a Scandinavian style.

For example, this bird print

And also, this screen printed tulip fabric. I cannot get enough of the fabric! I love it a lot. I have my eye on it for a skirt! You can't get any more 'Scandi' with those big bright bold tulips.

One of my all-time favorite textile designers who uses Scandi-like design in her work is Lucie from Summersville. In fact the design featured above is called "Scandi." I have purchased her fabrics over the years to make into dolls. She has been given the muchly deserved great honor of having her fabrics printed by Moda! Now I can buy her work by the yard. I plan to do so. Many yards. Check out her shop here.

Bird plush - I like this little birdie.

And finally to end my Scandinavian-inspired round up, are these wonderfully illustrated coasters. I purchased Christmas cards with a similar design a couple years ago.

What inspires you?
