This weekend we took advantage of the cool temps and sunny skies and went camping. We traveled to Brookville, Indiana, which is a far-enough drive away that it feels like we're going somewhere but not too far for just the weekend. While there we visited Metamora, an old-fashioned canal town. We discovered a shop where you can mine for gems and oh man the girls were in HEAVEN! Especially Arlene, she absolutely LOVES to sift for gems.
You buy a bucket of sand that has a bunch of gems and stones mixed in it. The girls don't realize that it's a totally manufactured thing - you get a certain amount of gems depending on the price range of the bucket. We got a $10 bucket and it had a decent mix of stones that they could split.
| Mining is serious business. |
| She was so pleased with herself that she found an arrowhead. |
They got a brochure that identifies each gem, mineral and stone, and that kept them entertained the rest of the weekend as they tried to figure out what they got. We plan to make jewelry out of the smaller pieces they found - wire-wrapped rock rings and pendant necklaces.
