We baked! Pie pops!

I had been drooling over these pie pops ...

... ever since I saw them on Pinterest a month ago. Just the idea of pie on a stick? Yum, I'm IN! The Pinterest link led to this tutorial and I also found this recipe online. {There are a lot of recipes online for various pie pops!} Both recipes seemed simple, simple enough for ME to do (I am not good in the kitchen, trust me) so the girls and I gave it a go this past weekend. They came out GREAT!

Here's the recipe:

* 1 package refrigerated Pillsbury pie crust

* Pie filling
{any kind of pie filling - you could also use jam}

We found strawberry rhubarb at Kroger! YUMMMM! Rhubarb is my favorite kind of pie!

* Sanding sugar
{we bought ours at Hobby Lobby - you could use regular sugar too}

* Sticks
{we bought cookie sticks at Hobby Lobby}

* Circle cookie cutters

*Little plastic candy bags {purchased at Hobby Lobby in the cake isle}

* Ribbon to tie the plastic baggies

* A cute container for displaying!

Steps:

* Flour your surface lightly, then roll out one of the pie crusts
{Put the other half of the crust in the fridge 'till you need it}

*Use a small circle cutter to cut out the shapes

The girls thought they had to press hard {teehee!}

*Lay the shapes on a cookie sheet

*Press a stick into each shape
{Press it firmly but not too hard so it goes all the way through.}

*Put a teeny amount of filling in the center of each crust
{Not too much or it will squish out the sides!}

*Put the tops onto each crust

*Press the crust layers together.

{Umm, those are Lydia's hands - don't they look like big girl hands?!  Geez. My babies aren't babies no more!}

*I used a little wooden skewer to press into the sides of the crust to seal it and to make it look more pie-like!

*Brush the tops of each pie pop with egg white.

*Add sanding sugar to the tops.

*Poke teeny vent holes into the tops of the pie pops {I used the little skewer to poke the holes.}

*Put them in the oven!  400 degrees for 10 minutes.

Look how good our first batch came out!  YES!

Darling!!

Kid tasted, kid approved!

We had leftover crust after our first go-round, so we tried to roll it out and use it.

Rolling, rolling, rolling ....

More rolling, rolling ...

But what we discovered is that we rolled the dough too thick, so they came out all weird looking!

But they tasted good! So we ate them up first.

We used the other half of the crust {the crust that was in the fridge} and made up pretty pie pops. {I rolled out the remainder of that crust really thin the second time-round and they turned out much better. So remember, thin crust is key!}

We had such fun baking! There has been one other time when I baked with the girls {we made cupcakes} and I need to do it more often because it was fun and we didn't mess it up!{I did burn my hand a little, I touched the really hot cookie sheet on accident, whoops!}

They're just so dang cute! And good!

I put them in a mason jar - extra cuteness!

I bagged the pie pops and tied them with ribbon to keep them fresh. Extra, extra cuteness!

We used teeny tiny cookie cutters to cut out a few of the centers. When we make the pie pops again we'll do more this way!

Also: we tried to use a star cookie cutter shape to make the pops but it didn't work too good - the sides didn't seal properly. Circle is the way to go!

They are tasty! You can't add too much of the filling, so the pops are heavy on the pie crust, but that's OK by me, I like pie crust!

Fun, fun, fun!  Fun kitchen times, go figure!

And finally, we have a completion date!

We're so excited! We have an estimated completion date for the new house!

September 20, 2011!

YAAAY!

As our house has progressed I've been asking for an estimated completion date because I just needed a DATE to put on our calendar. The builder was waiting to give me a date until he fixed the issue with our master bathroom ceiling and then he had to schedule drywallers. Well, the drywall was finished this past weekend and finally, he gave me a date! Granted, something could throw that date off, but I'm so elated to actually have a DATE! We will have a walk-through of the completed house one week before, on September 13, and our closing is scheduled for the 20th. WE CANNOT WAIT!

Master bathroom, with the ceiling how it should be - vaulted!

Handmade Summer Skirt Number Ten

This skirt was the very first one I made, and I have to mention my mom's huge help in this summer skirt wardrobe endeavor! I always had the notion that I could NOT sew clothes, because I have a really hard time deciphering the patterns. My mom is a very good seamstress, I get my skills from her! She sat down with me one Saturday afternoon and we made this skirt. I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was with her help and guidance! I went on a roll after this first one and made nine others, and for a couple I even used a different pattern, one that I was able to read and follow!

I love this fabric - I love tulips! I used two coordinating prints of the same design. The cotton is really super soft too, this is the softest feeling skirt of all of them that I made. I used Simplicity Pattern 2606.

I bought a bright orange cardigan to pair with this skirt, and I wear a pale yellow tank top under it along with my little yellow metal flower pin.

Since the tulips are also pink, yellow and white, I can pair the skirt with any of my other zillion cardigans and tank tops.

So that's it, all 10 of my summer skirts!

Handmade Summer Skirt Number Nine

Here's skirt number nine of the ten that I made for my summer wardrobe! This skirt was the first one that I made using a contrasting hem band and it was actually done by accident. I accidentally didn't buy enough of the flowery fabric, so I had to buy a new coordinating piece of fabric for the hem. I was going to get a pink or mauve color for the bottom but decided to be a little daring and go with orange. I really like the end result! I used Simplicity Pattern 2606 for this one - both fabrics are cotton.

I plan to make more skirts in the future, perhaps a fall/Halloween skirt and definitely some skirts next year. One thing I will do when I make more is sew lines across the elastic band all across the skirt. You can see in the photo above that the elastic is twisted on the left side. That happened after the third washing, and it's happened to a few of the other skirts too. I can fix it by pulling it taught, but it usually goes back into this twisted position. By running a few extra stitches through the elastic it should stay in place. Since I wear my shirts or sweaters over the band it doesn't show but it does look slightly bunchy.

I paired this skirt with a pink jacket I already had and my purple/pink shoes!

Handmade Summer Skirt Number Eight - four different looks!

When I set out to sew my summer skirt wardrobe, I purposefully stayed away from black fabrics because I already have a lot of black outfits that I wear to work and I wanted my skirts to be light, bright and summery. But, I had this fabric stashed away ... I had purchased it for another project. When I found it I knew it would make up a really cute skirt. And it did - this is one of my favorite skirts!  I can pair it with just about any color combination. I used Simplicity Pattern 2606.

Here it is paired with a white tank top and a short-sleeve black cardigan and a long necklace:

Same outfit, the cardigan is buttoned up and I added my orange flower pin! Looks a little Halloweenish huh?

The skirt with a white tank and a blue jean jacket and a blue flower pin:

This time with a lavender cardigan!

The color combinations are endless!

Two more skirts to go - I made 10 total

Handmade Summer Skirt Number Seven

This skirt, summer skirt number seven, is just fun!

I made it out of Simplicity Pattern 2606. I used cotton fabric for the skirt and the hem and some green ric-rac too. The fabric is a fun little forest design. I wasn't sure about wearing this one to work because it looks sort of playful, rather than professional, but when wear it I got a lot of compliments. I think I'll wear this one more when it gets cooler out ... although the trees are green in the design, it reminds me of fall!

I paired the skirt with a white polo shirt and a light green sweater I already had, which matched perfectly.

{Oy, the wrinkles! It drives me mad to see them but not mad enough to re-shoot my pictures!}

Handmade Summer Skirt Number Six

Handmade summer skirt number six is one of my favorites!  Well, I really like all of them, but this one I especially like!

I made it from Simplicity Pattern 2606 - I used the same modern floral material for the skirt and the trim.

It was purely by accident that the sweater set I already had matched the skirt perfectly! And the necklace too!

I feel extra girly whenever I wear this skirt. {I don't know why!}

Handmade Summer Skirt Number Five {two looks}

This skirt has two looks!

I made this skirt out of a versatile black cotton fabric that has teeny flowers in orange, red, blue and yellow. I used Simplicity Pattern 2224 for it.

The first look, paired with my sunny yellow cardigan:

The second look, paired with a short sleeve black cardigan and one of my yellow metal enamel pins:

I sewed 10 skirts - this week I showcased five, next week, the other five!

Handmade Summer Skirt Number Four

This skirt, skirt number four out of ten, is one of my favorites. It's so cheerful and sunny!

I made it one using Simplicity Pattern 2606 with a cotton gray/white/yellow daisy pattern and a white cotton hem. I ADORE the yellow ric-rac! I love ric-rac a lot.

I pair it with my yellow cardigan and a white tank top.
