A scrap(e) book

My life's mission is complete. I have a crafty minion. It's official and I have proof.

Arlene is very artistic. I can see it. I can see the wheels churning in her head when she gets an idea about something she can make. She is constantly making stuff or doing little drawings.  When she was a toddler she always made these elaborate "book houses" - she'd open up books and set them up in the living room, creating an entire house with different rooms. She's very visual. Now-a-days, she creates more elaborate things and uses crayons and objects. Remember her Monster Book from awhile ago?

Case in point. While we were decorating the front of our house with Halloween stuff this weekend, I look over and see this:

Making flowers out of yarn and leaves!
{You like her bracelet? It's a balloon bracelet made by a clown.}

She then asks if she can gather up leaves for something. Sure. Go ahead.

She's been working on a scrap(e) book for awhile now. She tapes things into it, little collections of things and stuff that she likes.  She put her leaves into her book, as well as a few berries from the backyard.

Look at this!  I loooooove it.

teeehee - scrape

Pages 1 & 2

Close up, page 1. That picture of her is from her One-Year Photo Shoot (that I took, holla! - I forgot how absolutely CUTE those pics turned out!)

Close up page 2.

The "letter" 7 - ha!

So sweet.

Pages 3 & 4.  A drawing of Sponge Bob Square Pants and "bubble letters" of names. (By the way, drawing bubble letters is hot hot stuff in kindergarten. FYI.)  Page 4 is from when we went to the Barbie Exhibit at the Indianapolis Children's Museum.

I'm thinking pretty soon I'm going to teach her how to sew so that she can help me make stuff for my shop!  Free labor!  In all seriousness, Arlene's creativity warms my heart. It makes me so happy. I'm going to do my best to nurture her creative spirit in the coming years.

Etsy Favorites Wednesday - stuff for the girlie girls

This week's Etsy Favorites Wednesday list is a list of stuff for the girls, who will be six on Saturday - stuff I'm going to make (if I have time, which I hope I will!) and a few things I already purchased.

Halloween Barbie Dress - My grandmother used to make Barbie clothes for me; I was always amazed that she could sew such little items of clothing!  Especially pants for Barbie - she's got some teeny tiny legs. Anywho - I got this cute little pumpkin dress for Lydia's Barbie. This lady's shop is really darling - I'll be bookmarking her for future purchases too.

Halloween Barbie Dress take two - Ditto - this dress is for Arlene's Barbie!

Earrings - I was going to buy these earrings for the girls and then I stopped myself and said, crafty self, YOU can make these!  So I'm going to get some cute buttons and make the girls some clip earrings. I don't know if I'd be able to find Hello Kitty buttons (those are super cute!) but I'm sure I can find something equally cute.

Headband - I really like this, but I haven't bought it. Yet.

Crochet flower headband - That child's hair is super cute, and so is that headband!  I found a free crochet flower pattern on Lion Brand Yarn's web site that is similar to that flower, so I'm going to make the girls my own headbands with crocheted flowers.

Country Living Fair: the goods

The Country Living Fair is a fair of awesomesness. It's antique/vintage mixed with craft. It was in Columbus this past weekend. Good crafts. Good artsy crafts. No hand sewn clothes for cement porch geese at this fair, oh no. As a crafter myself, I will admit, I'm a bit of a craft snob. The crafts I like are crafts of quality, crafts that are unique and different. While I do enjoy the occasional crafty-fest that has the hokey crafts like the clothing for cement porch geese and plastic canvas tissue box covers, I get really super pumped about crafts shows like the Country Living Fair. Not only do I see a bunch of stuff that I want to buy but I also get a lot of ideas!

And the extra bonus about this year's Country Living Fair?  I got to meet a fellow blogger, Jill, and friend from Twitter, Lori. It was so nice getting to hang out with them at the Fair!
It so happened that Arlene accompanied me to the Fair while Lydia stayed home and spent the day with Daddy. Arlene and I had a great time together! It's nice to be able to spend Mommy-daughter time with just one kid at a time. It rarely happens.

We found some good stuff!

I got that silver tray with the little round magnets on it. I knew that it would go great above my purple couch in the living room, under my shelf. And it does.

The magnets look like doilies!

I made this flower!  Jill and I made them at the Longaberger Basket booth. It was fun!

Arlene LOVES this bunny. We had found it when we were just starting out looking at the booths. She remembered it on the way out, after almost three hours, and asked to go back and find it.

It is quite cute. She put it on her dresser and told her sister that she can share it with her, but that she can't touch it. It's for looking only.

I got this square piece of pottery as a trinket holder or whatever. Turns out the artists, Baum Pottery, have a studio nearby. I'm not really sure yet what I will use this square piece for. I think it would be neat as a soap dish or a ring holder. I wouldn't mind hanging it on the wall somehow. For now, it's sitting beside my kitchen sink.

I was attempting to show the depth of the design on the inside - this photo doesn't do it justice though. The piece has a slight lavender glaze to it, and on the inside it appears to have crushed purple glass. It's so beautiful!

I was really admiring the work of Cart Before the Horse but unfortunately the pieces at the Fair were outside of my budget. They have a web site where you can see the work.

I wanted this piece, Willow, that I saw at the fair:

It's my goal to collect some of their pieces - I'm putting Willow on my Christmas list, for sure!  The artists behind Cart Before the Horse have a blog, which I've linked to my sidebar. I really really really! love their work.

Joy!  I always get so energized going to craft shows!  And now I have a to-do list a mile long of all of the things I want to make!  For starters:  skinny little crochet scarves!  I saw scarves that were simply just a line of single crochet, some had curls at the bottom, others had buttons. Super simple and fun to make!  I got lots of ideas for Halloween too ... I really want to find the time to carve a pumpkin and ghost stamp out of linoleum and stuff them!

And BAM! it's fall!

Last week it was 90 degrees. Then on Saturday, fall came. 72 degrees!

Windows open, crisp air! Fall makes me so happy.

On Saturday we went to our favorite pumpkin patch to buy pumpkins to decorate our porch. We buy pumpkins for decoration then go back and buy pumpkins for carving. The P house can never have enough pumpkins this time of year.

The pumpkin patch had a whole bunch of knotty worty pumpkins. I liked them a lot.

This photo made me laugh.

Cute pumpkins, dirty kids. (Arlene was crawling around in the dirt. )

HaHA!

And the porch decorations!

My little artsy-fartsy pumpkin set up!

I bought an orange mum - isn't it pretty!  I didn't like the black container it came in, but I didn't want to plant it and I didn't want to stick it inside a planter. So, I found some chunky orange yarn and wrapped it around the plain base. Instant snazziness!

Wow. Such enthusiasm.
Corn!  I was going to get corn stalks to put on either side of the door but I thought that might be a bit too much, so instead I got three sets of indian corn and hung them on the railing.
This Sunday, the inside decorations are going up!

I didn't think it was possible ...

... but this kid just got CUTER.

Arlene got her new glasses today!

Almost ...

It rained yesterday - rain!  We needed the rain. My mums are almost ready to bloom.

Arlene brought home this little reader book. Which she can read!

Etsy Favorites Wednesday - candy and cupcakes!

The girls' birthday party is next Saturday. We're doing a candy and cupcakes theme, and just wait until I show you all of the goodies we're cooking up!  For now, this week's Etsy Favorites Wednesday list features some pretty darn cute candy and cupcake themed things I found on Etsy!

Cupcake Hair Clippie - the girls are into accessorizing now-a-days. They put on their birthday wish list: headbands, hair clips and earrings (the verdict is still out on if they'll get their ears pierced this year, I say yes, daddy says, maybe)

Pumpkin S'mores - not really candy, per say, but decadent none the less!  My mouth is watering.

Hair Clips - I think these are sweet!

Moustache lollipops - Oooooo!  I am looking into purchasing these for the party!  If they can be shipped in time, I'm buying them!  What fun!
UPDATE! I ordered them!!  Yay!  So excited.

Pink bow headband - this is really quite simple but is also very precious.

More house love!

I'm quite fond of my Halloween Haunted House pillow. And! It's been featured in THREE Etsy Treasuries in the last week!  Two just on Monday!

Check out this one!

Take a gander at that list of houses!  Love it! I am so ready for Halloween, let me tell you!

And this one!

Here's the link to this fun Halloween treasury.

I really like that skelleton necklace, bottom left!

Here's a link to the Treasury the house pillow was in last week, in case you missed it.

Scratching my way out

You probably wouldn't know it based on what you know about me from reading my blog or knowing me online or even knowing me personally, because I've been attempting to keep it at bay:  I'm in a rut.  (Or maybe I'm kidding myself and I'm more transparent than I realize and in fact it is apparent?)  Anyway. Either way. I'm in a rut. And it's getting a little ugly. I keep trying to scratch my way out of that rut, but I keep getting bogged down by negativity.

By all accounts, I'm one lucky lady. I have a great husband who loves me and who cooks and cleans and is a great man and a great father. I have two great, bright, positive children who bring great joy to my life. My family is my life.  I don't feel complete unless the four of us are together.  I have a job that provides opportunities. My husband has a fulfilling job that he enjoys. We're both thankful for our jobs in this recession. We have a roof over our heads. We have vehicles in excellent condition. We have a new camper that has already provided some great memories. I have an undying passion for creating. All good things.

Each day, I wake up and I tell myself, "Today is going to be a good day. Don't get upset about stuff. Don't snap. Be nice." I struggle with not letting go of things. Things make me upset and I'm MAD and I can't get over it quickly. I struggle with not snapping. I struggle with getting myself ready in the morning to go to work, while getting the girls ready to get on the bus, and I try not to hurry-hurry-hurry them along too much, I try not to snap at them if I've told them six times to put their shoes on and instead they are in their bedroom playing with Barbies. I try. I try to be nice and not let work issues interfere with home issues. I try to leave work issues at work.  I try to not let issues with friends or family members upset me to the point where they put me in a sour mood.

I try. And I fail.  I struggle with the balance of having passion and caring about situations or people or my job, but yet, not caring so much that it affects my life negatively in other ways.  I don't even know why I'm sharing all of this here, on my blog. I guess as a way to admit that I'm admitting it?  As a way to find a way to turn the corner?  Perhaps that's it.  "Hello my name is Wendy and I'm in a rut. Now I'm going to try really hard to get out of that rut."

Awhile back, fellow blogger Two Pretzels discovered and shared the blog of Kelle Hampton, called Enjoying the Small Things. Kelle's blog is inspirational to me. For many reasons. One, her love for her daughters and the way that she writes about them. Her photos of her daughters are gorgeous. Two, her writing. I wish I saw my life the way she sees her life. Check that, I wish I documented my life in the way she documents her life. Her life isn't all peaches and cream and la-la-la everything's hunky dory. But yet, as the name of her blog implies, she takes glory in the small things. She doesn't write about what's bothering her, she writes about what is making her happy. She sees joy and greatness and happiness in the smallest of things. I want to do that. I strive to do that.

So, I will state now, that I'm going to attempt to be more positive. I'm going to try harder. To enhance my positive outlook on life. To be happier. To not mull over the mundane. To not get upset when things don't go my way. To not wait for the next thing to happen, but to live in the present. To live in the right now. To create freely. To forgive. To forget. To move on. To live fully.

Is that ------> working okay?

I installed a new Etsy widget over there, top right --------->

Does it work okay for you or slow the page down?  It's supposed to scroll through my shop's items. I think it's quite fancy dancy and I like it!  But only if it works right.  So be sure to let me know.  Thanks!

Yes, I'll be THAT type of parent

When the girls started kindergarten this year, I was nervous about them going to school, leaving the comforts of family and home and being on their own. I was nervous for them to go into a new environment and I didn't want them to be nervous or scared. I was more nervous than they were. For them, school = FUN!  School = EXCITEMENT! and new BFF's!

Never, in all of my freak-out-edness (ha, new word!) did I ever imagine I'd have to help the girls deal with a BULLY. Because they're in Kindergarten.  And kids are supposed to be nice and sweet at this age, right?  Well, on the very first day of school, a little boy, who we will call ShitHead (because he is indeed a ShitHead, not that I condone name-calling, but we're all adults here and ShitHead is a mild form of what I'd REALLY like to call the boy!) told Lydia that she had a "fat butt."  She was upset about it, and it was the first thing she told me about when she got off the school bus on her very first day.  I expected to hear about her classroom and her teacher and the other students, but nope, I heard about ShitHead and how he told her she had a "fat butt."  We laughed about it because it's so silly, really, and I explained to her that sometimes little kids are just mean because they don't know any better or because they are sad or mad on the inside. I was hoping it was an isoltated incident.

But it continued.  Daily.  I'd ask the girls "How was school today?" and I'd hear "The mean boy on the bus did this ..."  or "The mean boy called us stupid today" or "The mean boy snapped a rubber band at Lydia" or "The mean boy told us that our favorite song was dumb" and etc. etc.  Every single day, ShitHead did or said something bad to them.  He constantly said a bunch of crap to them, but the majority of stuff was targeted at Lydia.  That we can't exactly figure out.  Lydia seems to get the brunt of his insults, although she sits with Arlene and another girl friend.

This past Monday, Lydia tells me that the ShitHead hit her. He "punched" her in the face. I had her clarify and I had Arlene corroborate the story.  Apparently, ShitHead had been telling the girls that he was going to "get them" and "beat them up" and on Monday, he made a fist and hit Lydia. He didn't hit her hard, he didn't hurt her, he didn't leave a mark, but he touched her.  He made a fist and hit her nose. I was pissed.  Enough!  I had enough.  Talking smack and throwing around insults is one thing, but to actually hit her is another thing all together.  So on Tuesday morning I marched onto the bus with the girls and I told the bus driver about the situation. The kids have assigned seats on the bus, and because ShitHead is just a bad boy in general (the girls told me he opened a window one time and got into trouble, oooo!) his assigned seat is directly behind the bus driver. Because I had told the girls from the get-go that they needed to sit close to the driver, turns out their seat is directly behind ShitHead's seat.  I asked the driver if they could switch seats. He said he'd deal with it. I also called the Transportation department and complained.  I didn't get the response I had hoped for. They told me that they'd talk to the driver about it, but I got the feeling that they didn't really listen to me.

I stewed more about it and finally called the school principal. I felt like the kid needed to be disciplined for hitting Lydia.  If it would have happened in the classroom setting he would have gotten into trouble immediately. Why not on the bus?  The principal was very kind and she assured me that I did the right thing in calling her. She got Lydia out of class and had Lydia point out the kid in the yearbook. (All this time we don't even know the kid's name.) The principal told me and told Lydia that she'd deal with the problem. The boy will be moved seats, and if the problem persists, he'll change buses or be prohibited from riding the bus all together.

I hope the boy stops. He shouldn't be hitting anyone.  He's in second grade!  Why is he picking on a kid smaller than him?  If he hit her just lightly this time, what about next time?  What if he actually really hurts her?  Maybe he gets beaten at home so he's taking it out on other kids. I don't know. What I do know is I'm not going to let anyone mess with my kids. Yes, I'm going to be THAT mom, the one that marches into school at just the sniff of an injustice brought upon their kid. I'll stand up for my kids and make sure something is done about it.

The report so far, is good. The boy didn't cause trouble yesterday. I hope the same is true for today!  Because if not, the school hasn't heard the last from me.

Etsy Favorites Wednesday - retro pins

I have a mini collection going of vintage enamel and metal flower pins. I want to add to it!  I have red, yellow, blue and orange flower pins. Check these out!

Green pin - I like the movement of the petals.

Spoked red & white pin - This one is unusual.

Black and white daisy - None of my current flower pins have stems - I like that this pin has a stem!

Orange yellow & black pin - Perfect for Fall!
