I vant to ...

... read all of Charlaine Harris' vampire novels! Mike and I discovered the new HBO series called "True Blood" - we watched the first episode and liked it, and he told me that the series was based on a series of books. So I checked the out, and I immensely enjoyed them! I am not a fan of sci-fi or really horror fiction in general, but these books are great. They are cute, if vampire fiction can be cute, and they're believable, which is quite strange because the main character in the book is a vampire. I like the books better than I like the TV series.

There are so far eight books in the series. It's been a scavenger hunt for me to find them. I found the first one, Dead Until Dark, quite easily, but had to go to three bookstores before I found the second, Dead Until Dallas. I finished that quickly (they are quick reads) and wanted to get book #3, but couldn't find it. I just went to Amazon and ordered it, as well as books 4, 5 and 6. I figured I might as well stock up so I don't have to search for #4 once I finish #3. So I'm all set with my vampire fiction for now!

A belated blogger welcome!

This is a belated Blogger welcome to my cousin Stacey! Last week she started her blog, Ming Tea. She lives out in Oregon with her two most precious kids, Phoenix and Griffen, and a cool husband Paul too. I miss her a lot! She's artsy and crafty just like me. I keep telling myself I'm going to have to just brave it and get on a plane to go see her. Until then, I'll keep up to date with their goings-on by reading her blog!

Craft Show: Day Two

Today was a bit better for the craft show. We had more people come through ... but still not many. There were three church services so we had a flux of people after the services, but most of the folks were just walking through to be polite. After 12:30 p.m. there was no. one. there. The show was supposed to run until 3, but the other crafters started packing up at 2 so I did too. I did better today on sales - I sold four dolls and 5 magnets. I got a lot of compliments again on the dolls. People seemed to like the magnets, I'm guessing maybe because of the price? They were $2. For my next show (October 25) I'm going to make more magnets to take with me.

Overall I sold five dolls and 10 magnets. Not quite what I thought I'd do, but it's better than nothing. I'm happy that I went to the craft show - it was a learning experience and I got some great tips from other crafters. I won't do this same craft show next year ... I'm going to try to get into a show that has more craft booths and more customers.

I still have more than 30 dolls, but I don't think I'm going to put them in my Etsy shop right away. It takes a long time to photograph the dolls and get them into the shop. This week I'll be busy with PARTY PREP! The girls' fourth birthday party is this Friday evening!! Yay!

Here's a few pics of my booth today, I added a table and two signs. I think it looks better than Saturday. I'm definetely taking two tables to the show in October.

The dollies had a bit more room to stretch their legs today.

Craft Show: Day One

So today was the first day of my two-day craft show. It wasn't really that great. The craft show is at a local church, and I realized after I had been there for three hours that there wasn't much advertising done, because the only few customers that were there were from the church. And they weren't buying. The show was not busy at all ... at most I'd say 100 people came through. Which was disappointing! A lot of the crafters were complaining about it. I sold five magnets and one doll. That's it! BUT, I didn't have a horrible time - in fact I had a good time. The show ran from 10-4 and most of that time I was talking with the crafters around me. I got some really good tips on other craft shows to get into. There was a woman sitting next to me who was selling handmade candles. She's been selling them for five years at craft shows. She said this was going to be her last year at this church craft show because they don't get the people to come through.

The customers that did come through were nice enough ... I got a lot of compliments on the dolls and the pendants. I don't think people understand my pendants though, but I really don't know how to make it any clearer. They are handmade resin pendants. Handmade. Yes, I made them. Really. Yes, I did. I'm selling the pendants for $20 each, which includes a sterling silver chain. Which is a great deal. But people don't realize that. I really don't want to sound like a snob, but I just don't really think that people appreciate the quality of the pendants. I think people think: church craft show = cheap crafts. Not artsy modern things. Case in point: the woman sitting across the way from me was selling CRAP. Again, I don't mean to be a snob, but the stuff was just not my style at all. Yet people were flocking to her booth. Her table was a total mishmash of items. She was selling plastic beaded bracelets, scrunchy hair ties (didn't know those were still popular), and baby stuff: bibs, burp cloths, and the most annoying: purses that were made out of CHILDREN'S OVERALLS. They were hideous! She cut off the overalls below the crotch and sewed them up - the handles were the straps of the overalls. AND, she sold THREE of them. I almost threw up. Right there all over my craft table. Bleeeech.

Okay, so THEN, my dolls. I love my dolls. I'm proud of that. You know that. Almost everyone that went by my table told me how cute the dolls were. Yeah, I know. A lot of people showed interest, but only one sold. This cute little pre-teen girl bought one. She was so sweet. There were little girls that were interested too, but their mothers wouldn't buy them for them. They went across the way to buy a cheap plastic bracelet instead. The most aggravating thing is that I guess at the local senior center, the senior citizens were making "dammit" or "slammit" dolls. Rag dolls that, I guess, are sorta shaped like mine, and when they get irritated or mad, they take the dolls by the feet and slam them into the wall or table, and say "dammit dammit dammit." I was told this FOUR TIMES. Four times. Count them, F.O.U.R. Three of those people actually had to demonstrate to me how the dammit dolls are used - I almost cried at the sight of my precious dollies getting their heads slammed into the table. Thankfully none of those people wanted to buy my dolls. I say thankfully because honestly I don't think I'd sell them to them if I knew they'd be victimized in such a way!

The craft show runs from 9-3 tomorrow, and I'm hoping that since it's at a church, that we'll get the after-church crowd. We'll see! I totally don't regret going to the craft show, I think it's good experience for me. I'm not mad that my stuff isn't selling, it's all about exposure. I'm incredibly proud of myself for getting all of the dolls done that I wanted to get done. I feel like it's quite an accomplishment, I worked hard. At the show tomorrow, I'll stay busy by working on dolls that I'm making for the girls for their birthday! And hopefully selling maybe one more doll. I'll let you know how it goes!
Here are some pictures from today:

Tree damage photos

I was unloading pictures from my camera today and realized that I forgot to post pictures from the wind damage two weeks ago! Mike's car got slammed. We fared much better than a lot of people. There are a lot of people who had house damage ... shingles off of their roof, siding damage, etc. STILL, this whole tree-falling-on-car business is ANNOYING. First of all, it's the neighbor's tree. And conveniently, since the wind was an "act of God" his home owners insurance wouldn't cover it. So we have to go through our car insurance and pay our deductible. AND, it's taken all of last week to get the car fixed, and it's still in the shop - it might be done Tuesday. Lot sof body work to get all of the scratches out, and to replace his side mirror. Urgh. Stupid wind. Stupid neighbor's tree. Anyway, here are a few pictures:

Almost done!

I took this picture last night at about midnight - I'm almost done with the dolls! Only a few more to finish! I'll be ready in time for the craft show on Saturday. I'm so excited!

Etsy Favorites Wednesday

It's officially fall now. It's almost October. Does that mean I can get away with another Halloween-themed Etsy Favorites Wednesday? Still too early?

Would be good for hiding tricks or treats.

Love the vintage look of those pumpkins.

Another good one for hiding your tricks or treats.

Love the simplicity of it.

And yes, a non pumpkin-Halloween fav:

And WHY don't I have these yet? I don't know but I want them! How perfect!

Doll Week '08

This week is Doll Week '08 for me! It's crunch time. I have a craft show this weekend and I'm feverishly trying to finish up dolls. My pendants are all ready to go, but the dolls are taking much longer than I anticipated. I'm making 40 dolls, which I admit is way too ambitious, and I don't anticipate selling them all at the show this weekend, but still my goal is to finish all of them by this weekend. I also have a craft show at the end of October, so whatever doesn't sell this weekend I'll take to that show, and what doesn't sell there I'll put in my Etsy shop.

All of the dolls are sewn up, now they just need to be stuffed and stitched up! I'll be working like the dickens during my lunch break at work and in the evenings!

Doll Week '08 headquarters:

A pile of dolls waiting for their innards!

I have a lot of favorites from the batch. I'll have to take pictures of them once they are finished.

OH! And I have new business cards! I had a designer that I use at work design them up for me. I am so excited about them! I think they turned out great! They are going to be printed in full color gloss. (I had to cut and paste this graphic from a PDF, so it does not do the cards justice! Just trust me, they are great!)

Happy Fall!

Happy Fall! Happy Fall! Yay! I found these AWESOME mums last weekend. Aren't they gorgeous?

In honor of Friday's International Talk Like a Pirate Day

Arlene has been into pirates this week, so when I heard that Friday is Talk Like A Pirate Day, I just had to make her a pirate disguise. Lydia likes her beard.

Now we're just getting silly ....

Look how serious she is ... and do you see her hook hand? teehee

I need to carry a camera

I need to carry a camera with me at all times just to capture the crazy stuff that I see during my day. Case in point, this morning. I went into my usual Starbucks, and got my pumpkin spice latte, yum. I'm walking out, and I see a man sitting at one of the chairs out on the sidewalk. He has his coffee cup sitting next to him, and no way, that can't be. Oh my gawd. No, I'm not seeing this! Holy crap! HE HAD HIS DENTURES SITTING ON THE TABLE! Right next to his coffee cup! I had to look twice! Three times! I almost tripped and spilled by latte, which would have been a catastrophe. WHY IN THE WORLD, OF ALL THAT IS HOLY, WOULD HE HAVE HIS DENTURES SITTING ON THE TABLE? It's not like he was hidden from view, he was displaying it out there for all to see, sitting in front of the store, right by all of the cars driving by. And why, I have to wonder, would he take them out? Is it easier to drink coffee sans teeth? And aside from that, what's even grosser, is that he's going to put them back in his mouth, after they've been sitting on the dirty table! EWWWWWWWWWW!

Etsy Favorites Wednesday

This week's Etsy Favorites Wednesday is my crafy salute to our 30 hours of wind, wind damage, and no power. I searched "wind" and "power" and "windy day" on Etsy and came up with many, many wonderful creations. I want to buy all of these things!

Wind blown dandelion wall decal - $60 by Lewas Design
Dandelions didn't stand a chance in our freakish wind storm. But this wall decal is cool.

These pinwheels actually work! I love them.

It really is amazing how debilitated we were when the power went out.

Tee hee hee! These are too funny. The listing suggests using glow-in-the-dark yarn. How funny! Maybe I should make a bunch for the next power outage?

Our house smelled delightful during the power outage because of all of our deliciously scented candles. I need to buy these candles to restock.

The winner of the Two Stars give-a-way is ...

Our power came back on just in time for the winner to be chosen for the Second Two Stars Give-A-Way! Lydia picked the winner tonight ... check to see if it's you!!

I had a total of 13 people register to win - that is awesome! Thank you to everyone who entered!

Miss winner Traci, please email me at wendyplanicka(at)yahoo(dot)com and give me your address and I'll ship the pendant your way promptly!

Wendy doesn't like the windy weather

We had a freaky wind storm in Cincinnati on Sunday. For about five or more hours, we had winds at 40 mph, with 75 mph gusts. The results: massive power outages and tree damage. (I got that pic to the left off a news site, it's not our yard.)

We are without power, have been for almost 24 hours now. My mom has power; she lives about 10 minutes from us. There are a few places here and there that have power. We've been at my mom's most of the afternoon. We didn't have to go into work today.

We were lucky than most, because the only damage we had was to Mike's car - a large branch from the neighbor's tree fell on the side/hood of his car. His side mirror got broken off, and he has scratches all over.

The power company is saying it could be DAYS until the power comes back on. I have no idea if I'll work tomorrow or not! What a weird couple of days!!

One year blogiversary!

Today is my one-year blogiversary! I started this blog a year ago with no real goal in mind, just kind of as an outlet for all things Wendy: my life, the girls, my crafts, work, etc. etc. I have enjoyed it immensely. I have met some "internet" friends by reading other people's blogs and in turn they read my blog. I've even connected with some other moms who searched Google for "toe walking" and came to my blog and my posts about Lydia's toe walking. I've had fun with this, and I hope that my grand total of three readers including my mom (Hi Mom!) have enjoyed it too. (Ha, I have no idea how many people read this!) To my readers, I say thank you! Here's to another year of useless ramblings and crafty promotions!

The fabric pencil is my nemesis

I am going to cry. Really, I think I just might. I am working on a batch of dolls for a craft show in two weeks. I do the arms of the dolls in assembly line fashion - I trace them all out on my fabric and sew them all at once, then cut them out. I usually use a disappearing ink pen to trace my patterns ... well last night my pen ran out. So I used a water soluble pencil. I traced about 30 arms, sewed them up, and then tried to get the blue marks to come out. THEY WON'T COME OUT! My disappearing ink disappears in 12 hours, so I have never had to worry about them. But these stinking blue marks will not come out! I tried everything, spritzing them, putting them in the washer in cold water, drying them, washing them with soap ... nothing worked. The blue marks are still there. Which means that I cannot use the arms, since the seams have blue lines in them. Boo hoo hoooooo! I will have to go buy a new disappearing pen and re-sew the 30 arms. I have to re-do two hours of work! Waaaaaaaaaah!

New doll labels!

Aren't these great?! I ordered them from Etsy and they came in the mail today - personalized labels! I'm going to sew them onto the backs of my dolls.

Etsy Favorites Wednesday!

Wednesday! I'm wearing knee highs and heels today - haven't worn either in about four months. But since there's a chill in the air, I guess flip flops aren't appropriate attire anymore. Anyway, happy Wednesday and happy Etsy Favorites Wednesday! Enjoy!

These dolls are darling! I love mommy and me sets of dolls.

The girls are obsessed with lip stick and chap stick - I'm so getting them these for Halloween! The description of each flavor is really funny!

I've had these moulds in my favorites for awhile ... what do you think ... should I buy them and try to make resin bracelets? Might be fun!

I know this looks freaky, but something about it intrigues me.
Looks so yummy I could eat it!

Lydia got her new braces!

***If you've landed on my blog from searching the 'net for info on tip toe walking or serial casting or AFO braces, hello. This particular post here is one in a number I wrote about my daughter's tip toe walking. I encourage you to start with this post instead. It encapsulates our journey more succinctly.***

Lydia's new day-time braces came in! We got them last Friday but had to search for shoes that fit them. The braces are longer than her foot, and wide, so we had a dickens of a time trying to find the right shoes. Tonight we went to Stride Rite and found the cutest shoes, and they don't look like ski's on her feet. I think they look cute! She struggles a little bit walking in the braces because they will not allow her walk on her tip-toes. She'll wear the braces for an hour Wednesday, then two hours on Thursday and so on until she builds up to eight hours a day. She has to wear them for eight hours a day every day. Once it's pants weather I bet you couldn't even tell that she had the braces on because her pants would cover them up. She's got a super great attitude about them too, which is just awesome. I'm nervous for her to wear them to preschool, but kids are so much more accepting than adults, so I'm sure she'll be fine.

This is the third thing we've tried to stop her from tip-toe walking, and I hope it works. We've tried squeeker shoes, night-time braces (which she will still wear) and now these day-time braces. She'll wear these for at least six months. I hope these do the trick! Lydia's entire tip-toe walking story is here (read from the bottom up). More pics:

She cracks me up with her poses!
